(FinancialHealth.net) – Americans have been waiting on pins and needles for a treatment for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. According to the CDC, as of August 25, it has killed more than 176,000 people. President Donald Trump recognized the severity of the coronavirus at its onset and launched “Operation Warp Speed” to fund scientific research into the disease to find new treatment options. On August 23, the commander-in-chief announced the hard work is paying off.
During a press conference on Sunday, Trump told the American people the FDA has approved an emergency authorization allowing doctors to use convalescent plasma to treat the coronavirus. Physicians will infuse plasma from recovered patients into people currently sick in the hope that the antibodies will help boost their immune response.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar spoke at the presser too and said people who were treated with the plasma within three days of testing positive “saw about a 35% better survival” rate.
FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn discussed the survival rate.
"A 35 percent improvement in survival is a pretty substantial clinical benefit," FDA Commissioner @SteveFDA said in relation to the convalescent plasma emergency use authorization issued today. pic.twitter.com/Dd97vLSZeL
