(FinancialHealth.net) – Congress is still working diligently to get a second stimulus bill passed. While it seems as though Americans will see another round of direct payments, another question weighs heavy on the minds of those involved. Will adults who owe child support receive stimulus checks? Should they?
When the first round of direct payments was released, those who owed back child support did not receive stimulus payments, instead receiving letters that their amounts were being garnished and applied to their child support debt. In some cases, the current spouses of those who owed also lost part of their stimulus.
What isn’t yet clear is the language on the next bill. Depending on how it’s worded, those who owe child support may or may not see the same level of garnishment. The wording of the Heroes Act (originating in the House) prohibits such garnishment, while the HEALS Act (originating in the Senate) does allow for it.
The nuances are varied but nothing is certain – and won’t be until the legislature negotiates and passes a final bill. Let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you.
