As the news about the deaths broke, so did reports that Congress was close to inking a $7.5 billion deal to combat the illness. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) confirmed lawmakers were close to a deal.
The funding package is moving quickly through Congress, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he hopes to have it finished before mid-March. If passed, the money will be used to fund more testing for the illness and shore up the country’s emergency response.
