(FinancialHealth.net) – The COVID-19 pandemic is hurting a lot of people financially. One of the ways that some officials want to make it easier on families is by canceling rent. Not everyone thinks that’s such a great idea though.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), known as AOC, and other Democrats are pushing the “#CancelRent” movement. They believe people shouldn’t have to worry about paying for their housing when they’ve lost their jobs as a result of the coronavirus.
Over 20 million people have lost their jobs since COVID-19 hit the US.
Not one deserves to be frightened about eviction or foreclosure during a pandemic.

What About the Landlords?
Property owners across the country are saying this movement is not the answer. All it does is push economic suffering on to someone else. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) says she has a solution and introduced a bill that would forgive rent but create a relief fund for landlords.
The problem then becomes: Who is paying for this relief fund? The US is spending trillions of dollars on COVID-19 aid. At a certain point, we aren’t going to have the money to keep giving. There’s no doubt it’s a problem that people are unable to pay their bills, but the solution probably isn’t going to be found through hashtags on Twitter.
